Using Wikis in your Course

Filed under: Friday Feature — psteinbronn @ 7:15 am

Have you tried using a wiki in your online course? How did it work for you? What did you find useful? What would you change about how you interact with students through the wiki? According to an article published by Educause (http://bit.ly/s33WYB) there are many benefits:

“Key  Takeaways

    • Wikis help engage students in their learning while providing social interaction with their peers in the learning process.
    • A wiki assignment should enable students to work at the conceptual level of understanding on authentic projects where they can solve problems, discover relationships, discern patterns, and develop a deep understanding of content.
    • At the heart of a wiki project is collaborative knowledge building by students mediated by user-generated design, as explained in this article.”

The article is worth the time it takes to read it as it contains a wealth of information, ideas, and suggestions for using wikis more effectively with students.

New Addition to AEA PD Online Moodle

Filed under: Friday Feature — psteinbronn @ 7:00 am

An additional plug-in/activity module has been added to the AEA PD Online Moodle server. Hopefully, you will find this addition helpful in your online teaching. The new activity module is called Questionnaire. You can access it by clicking on the “Add an Activity” drop-down and choosing Questionnaire.

What is it and how do you use it?

The Moodle Questionnaire module is a survey-like type of activity. It allows teachers to create a wide range of questions to get student feedback e.g. on a course or activities. The goals of the Questionnaire module are quite different from those of the Moodle Lesson or Quiz modules. With Questionnaire you do not test or assess the student, you gather data. There are several types of questions in Questionnaire. They are:

  • Check Boxes
  • Date Box
  • Dropdown choices
  • Essay box – HTML editor possible, set width and height of box
  • Numeric – can set length and number of decimal places
  • Radio buttons – have labels you determine for each question
  • Scale – can customize in many ways
  • Text box
  • Yes/no

You can also place:

  • Page breaks
  • Labels – might be used to give an overview of next set of questions

The Questionnaire module allows users to create your own questions, unlike the Survey module which has presets to choose from, and it allows for more advanced questionnaires. Users are able to customize the survey as they wish.

Other Moodle Module

Another module I have been “testing” in a test environment is the Game Module.

This module includes 8 different game types created from existing quizzes or glossaries on your course, making them 30 second jobs to set up if you already have your activities created. They are simple to use create and fun to use. The types of games included are:

  • Hangman
  • Crossword
  • Cryptex
  • Millionaire
  • Sudoko
  • The Hidden Picture
  • Snakes and Ladders
  • Book with Questions

Does this one sound intriguing to you? Would you like to help “test” it out? Contact me and I can provide access to the test environment so you can try it yourself. When it is determined that this module is one that provides sound pedagogy and will enhance the learners online learning experience, it will be added to the AEA PD Online Moodle production environment. So, weigh in here with your thoughts. How would you use it in an online course? Would it be helpful for students in an online course?

Add your comments.

Tools, Tools, Tools

Filed under: Friday Feature — psteinbronn @ 7:00 am

I am hooked on finding and trying out  new technology “tools”. The “tool” could be an actual gadget or a Web 2.0 piece of software that is easy to use and, of course, free. So I look for lists of things others blog about and recommend. I do have my own favorites which I have blogged about before.

The Edudemic web site has a list of they call The 35 Best Web 2.0 Classroom Tools Chosen By You. The list was created simply based on the number of times each was mentioned on Twitter during a hashtag, #edchat, discussion. Check out this list too.

Kathy Schrock has developed a rubric that is useful for  evaluating an online tool.

Are there any tools on any of these lists that you like to use? Any there any tools that didn’t make it on these lists that you would recommend to others? Please share your favorites with us.
